Google bought AI avatar startup to beat TikTok

Google has quietly bought a startup that creates artificial intelligence (AI) avatars for social media users and brands. The search engine giant bought this startup called Alter for $100 million. News Engadget. According to news, Google acquired the startup almost two months ago without any announcement. The search engine giant acknowledged the acquisition last Thursday but did not disclose financial details. According to TechCrunch, Google bought Alter mainly to better compete with TikTok. After starting out as Facemoji, Alter allows developers to add avatars to apps and games through their platform. Alter currently has one and a half billion monthly active subscribers.
